Whats Wrong With The Ohio Hip Hop Awards??
**DISCLAIMER** The following letter is not intended to be a diss, cheap shot or some sort of subliminal message toward the Ohio Hip Hop Awards or members of their staff. Jus mere feedback and constructive criticism from someone who doesn’t mind speaking their mind….ENJOY!!!
This past weekend the 5th Annual Ohio Hip Hop Awards took place in Cleveland, Ohio (keep that in mind for future reference later on). Like every year the event is supported by many months in advance leading up to the actually event with a trillion “I Know you don’t know me and never heard of me but nominate and vote for me” campaigns. We all know how businesses operate; we have to get people to buy what we are selling. How does one do that in this case—marketing. It’s a system set up to make all you nominees the official unofficial street team of the OHHA. You see an ideal situation would not call for you to solicit nominations or votes. Your work should speak for itself. But how can YOUR work speak for itself if the Ohio Hip Hop Awards themselves are--for a lack of better words--“unaware” of what is taking place in other cities besides Cleveland. Sure these OHHA “showcases” are cool, but are they really representative of what is really taking place in those cities? Absolutely NOT!!
Now many may think this letter is intended to voice displeasure in not winning an award (Best Mixtape DJ and Best Mixtape Collab). Lets clear that up now! It’s not about winning the $18 plaque because in no way should that shape the work you have done or should continue doing. I will always continue to support the event because it represents my state, the networking opportunities and it’s an overall GREAT event for everyone. However, the disappointment comes at the “fairness” and “equality” of the event itself. We have all heard the event being dubbed as the “Cleveland Hip Hop Awards”. It’s no secret that holding the awards in Cleveland has a huge bearing on the awards given out. Not just musically but finically (sponsors etc), promotionally (radio, clubs, DJs etc) and relationships (Does one deal with Cleveland daily or Cincy daily??). The only way I think this can be changed is by rotating cities across Ohio annually in various cities in Ohio. Hell, what’s wrong with holding the awards in Columbus? It’s central, it’s the capital and clearly there would be no bias there! What about Cincy? Nice city, plenty of local attractions, radio would support it and without a doubt the artist will def be behind it. If you haven’t noticed they deep EVERY year in Cleveland why wouldn’t they?
Another thing, the award process is –excuse my language—some BULLSHIT! At the end of the day the whole system needs to be altered. How about eliminating this whole “Nominate me” system and develop a OHHA Committee in EVERY city in the state consisting of a representative from radio, street DJ, club DJ, promoter, media member and 1 or 2 artists. These positions could obviously change annually but what this creates is some truth into what’s really going on in that particular city. Let’s be honest, putting on an award show is a TOUGH JOB, there is NO WAY you know what’s going on in EVERY city! I know that because NEVER has ANYONE from OHHA come to Akron and stopped in on my club, hit any of our mom and pop shops to see a shelf full of tapes or sat in on a studio session with any of our local artists… what about yours???
As the Internet grows the less significant these awards and others will become. We all know the economy is bad which probably caused for the change of venue this year. It was very uncomfortable, a bit unorganized and I don’t think people really felt it was an event of substance that day. I did hear good things from the networking event the next day which hopefully was good compensation for those who felt slighted the day before. Understand that this weekend is not designed around winning the plaque, it’s about building you network, which in this game means WAY more than any award at ANY show. Trust me nobody in Texas, Kansas, Cali, Idaho etc cares about an Ohio Hip Hop Award. It is great recognition IN STATE, but at some point one must expand from there. And because some people in the state expand more outside the state than others, we seemed to get penalized for doing so and fail to get that recognition.
My last complaint comes in defense of my city. Akron. In the five years of the Ohio Hip Hop Awards I can’t recall ONE winner. I may be wrong but I did HEAVY research on this. I find this very amazing, especially this year with a group (Da Kennel) having one of the most added records in the country, a video on MTV Jams and several national tours (I don’t need to speak much on that we have a mutual understanding on that project ;) lol) The point is let’s take the politics out of these awards for once. How you ask? How about putting up a real time poll which tracks the amount of votes each nominee receives. Make it to where you can only vote ONCE by confirming your email address (Now if you choose to make 18,763 different email addresses, we need to talk about hiring you on a web-marketing team because you clearly are not concentrating on music like you should lol) These are just some examples that would help ease the voices yelling how unfair the awards are.
Now I’m sure there are a ton of Cleveland people reading this thinking I’m just complaining and maybe I am but at the end of the day, yall do GREAT job representing the state but yall are not the ONLY representation of the state. If you going to have an OHIO awards show, make sure EVERYONE in represented!!
In closing, feel free to attack me on my comments and thoughts I’m already prepared for them. I just felt SOMEONE needed to speak on the issue publicly without the fear of “getting nominated” in the future or getting on the “bad side” of the OHHA. In all actuality it makes me no difference I have no ties with anyone and owe no one anything. I just personally get tired of “hearing” about the problem and not actually addressing the problem. Anyone who has ever ran a successful organization knows and understands the only way to grow and get better is by listening to constructive criticism for people OUTSIDE your camp. I hope that the organizers of the OHHA take my thoughts and the comments that may be left below into strong consideration in planning future awards.
Sincerely
